Ax-les-Thermes

It is both a spa, a summer resort, an excursion center and a winter sports resort in the Pyrenees. The town is located in the historic region of Sabarthès, near Andorra, and is located at the confluence of the Oriège, the Ariège and the Lauze, which are the 3 rivers that cross it.

The hot springs in the town all spring from granite. These waters have a high content of silica, sodium and especially sulphides and sulphur. Sulfur gives off a particular and characteristic smell. The temperature of sulphurous waters fluctuates between 15 and 45°C.
Ax is very well known in particular for its thermoludic space "Les Bains du Couloubret", equipped with a well-being area.


In summer or winter, you cannot miss the Ax 3 Domaines resort (Bonascre - Saquet - Campels). Created in December 1955, the station is located 8 kilometers from Ax-les-Thermes on the heights of the town, in the heart of the Canton of Haute-Ariège.It has no less than 37 runs in the three ski areas, and is accessible via the gondola during the winter season, and in summer during the months of July and August. Ax-les-Thermes and its resort have been part of the Tour de France stage towns since 1933, and in 80 years, the Tour de France has arrived in the town 11 times.

Among the remarkable places and monuments of the town, we can mention the Bassin des Ladres, in the center of the city, fed by hot springs emerging from the ground at 77 ° C, the Château de Villemur, the Church of Saint-Vincent , located Place du Breilh, the Saint-Jérôme Chapel, the oratory of the Virgin, the ruins of Castel Maou, or the Casino d'Ax, built in 1904 and recognizable by its 2 whimsical towers.

Ax also has a national forest with an area of 708.32 hectares, with an altitude varying from 1,200 to 1,797 meters. It is a Natural Zone of Ecological, Faunistic and Floristic Interest (ZNIEFF), a natural space inventoried because of its remarkable character.

Finally, since 1996, Ax Animation, in the heart of the city, ensures the realization and the production of actions in the artistic, cultural and festive fields.
