The town of L'Hospitalet is accessible either by the National Road 20, the National 22, or the National 320 by the Col and the Puymorens Tunnel, which opened in 1994.
Diminutive of the Celtic "Hospitaly", which means "House of refuge", it is a place where people once came to shelter when crossing the passes of the Pyrenees in snowy or stormy weather.
It is a town where a relatively cold climate prevails in winter, and where the snow does not disappear before the beginning of April. Summers are on the other hand rather sunny, without the heat being unbearable.

The town is crossed by rivers such as the Ariège, or the Coume Vieille stream and that of the Fuillaterre.
