Walks and hikes
  • The circuits Hikes & Trains will lead you to the discovery of the villages of the high valley of the Ariège and the "Corniche" by walking on the roads formerly used by the villagers to go from one village to the other. You will discover many vestiges of the life of the peasants and from the life of the villagers: fountains, washhouses, culture terraces, mills, Romanesque churches ...

DEPARTURE: Train station of Luzenac Garanou (600m).
From Luzenac-Garanou station, take the road on the left and then turn right in the direction of Garanou. Cross the bridge over the Ariège and reach the top of the village until a fountain. Follow the direction of
Vernaux which goes up by path and by road; you pass in front of the Romanesque chapel of Vernaux built in stone of tuff. In Vernaux, take the direction of Lordat and the ruins of its medieval castle.

At Lordat, in the direction of the visitors' car park: viewpoint of interpretation of the landscape. At Lordat the route leads you through a shady path in the heart of the village of Axiat, where you can discover the charming Romanesque chapel on your right, taking the D20 on the right for 500m. Returning to the edge of the trail, climb into the village in the direction of Appy that you join by a succession of paths on the mountain side (Route de la Corniche). Continue, always on the flank until the villages of Caychax and Senconac.

At Senconac, leave the road by climbing into the village and then find the path leading to Verdun, first on the flank and then by a long descent. In Verdun, go down the village by the road to reach the Ariège that you cross before arriving at the village of Les Cabannes. In the main street, turn right, pass the shops and turn right to find the station.
